Chun Doo-hwan, who was handed over to trial for defaming the deceased 5·18 party, has been sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison by the prosecution.

This is reporter Lim Tae-woo.

<Reporter> In

his memoir published in 2017, Chun Doo-Hwan claimed that the late Father Jobio, who testified that there was a fire from a martial law army helicopter at the time of May 18, was ``a unscrupulous liar whose word is a priest.''

Then, the family members of Father Cho accused him, and in May 2018, Mr. Jeon was charged with defamation of the deceased.

Two years and five months after being handed over to trial, the prosecution sought prison sentences for Mr. Jeon.

At Chun Doo-Hwan's decision hearing held in Gwangju District Court, the prosecution asked the court to sentence him to one year and six months in prison.

During the 17 trials held so far, the prosecution has focused on proving Jeon's allegations of defamation based on the report of the May 18 Special Investigation Committee, records of military units, and witness statements.

However, when he first appeared in court in April, he completely denied the allegations, saying there was no helicopter fire and did not defame.

In later trials, the lawyers did not deflect existing claims.

The crime of defamation of a lion is subject to imprisonment for up to two years, imprisonment, or a fine of up to 5 million won.

Today's (5th) resolution hearing was followed by a witness newspaper by an investigator of the 5 18 Special Investigation Committee, a final statement of opinion and a sentence by the prosecution, and the final defense of the former lawyer.

Mr. Jeon did not appear on the same day as he received permission from the court to not attend.

However, when the first trial sentence is scheduled for next month as soon as possible, it must be presented in court according to the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Act.
